What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the total value of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and $1 bills in the same collection. They count by 1s, 5s, 10s, and 25s as needed, stopping at $2.00 or less.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly total mixed collections worth no more than $2.00. They organize the money, change skip counts when the denomination changes, and record the amount accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count each coin as one object instead of using its value. They may confuse nickels and quarters, count mixed coins without changing skip counts, or treat a $1 bill as one cent.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Find the value of a $1 bill, 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 1 nickel, and 4 pennies. Show your counting sequence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs bags of plastic coins and $1 bills; students sort them, choose a counting order, and record each total.
Ask, “Why is it easier to count quarters before pennies?” Students write an explanation using one sample collection.
Play Money Draw: students draw four coin cards, total the value, and keep the cards when their answer is correct.
Set up a class snack shop with prices under $2.00, then have students choose and count exact payment for one item.
