What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select dollar bills and coins whose values add to a target price no greater than $2. They count mixed values accurately and trade one combination for another equal combination.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose coins and bills that match a target amount and count the total correctly. They can check their work and make the same amount in another way.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a larger coin has a greater value, so they value a nickel above a dime. They may count coins by ones instead of adding each coin's value. Some read $1.05 as $1.50 or forget that 100 cents equals one dollar.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use coin and bill cutouts to make $1.43. List each piece and show how the values add to $1.43.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs coin bags and amount cards, then have them build each amount and check it with a partner.
Ask, "How can you make 87 cents in two ways?" Students draw both sets and explain how they know each total.
Play Money Match by pairing target amount cards with coin and bill combination cards placed face down.
Set up a class store with prices under $2, and have students build the exact payment for three items.
