What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count mixed sets of coins and one-dollar bills worth no more than $2.00. They write each total correctly in cents or dollars, such as 86¢ or $1.36.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unsorted collection, a student groups and counts the money accurately. The student writes amounts such as 86¢ and $1.05 with the correct symbol, decimal point, and digits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the number of coins instead of adding each coin’s value. They may write 5 cents as $.5, use ¢ after a dollar amount, or omit the zero in $1.05.
How to Assess It
- Show one $1 bill, one quarter, two dimes, and three pennies. Ask students to count the collection and write its value correctly as $1.48.
