What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a large collection into equal groups of 10, with any extra objects left as ones. They count the groups by tens, then add the ones to name the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student quickly makes equal groups of 10 and separates the leftover objects. The student counts by tens, adds the ones, and records the correct numeral.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make groups with fewer or more than 10 objects. They may count each group as one instead of 10. Some reverse the digits when recording tens and leftover ones.
How to Assess It
- Give each student 68 counters. Ask them to group the counters, then write the number of tens, ones, and total objects.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 74 counters, cups, and a recording sheet to make groups of 10 and label the leftover ones.
Show 9 bundles of 10 straws and 4 single straws, then ask students to explain how they know the total.
Play Draw and Bundle, where students draw number cards, build each number with craft sticks, and earn a point for correct grouping.
Count a collection of classroom pencils by placing 10 pencils in each cup, then record how many pencils the class has.
