What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show each teen number as one full group of ten with some units left over. They use objects, pictures, words, and equations such as 14 = 10 + 4.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build or draw any number from 11 through 19 with one group of ten and the correct leftover units. The student can match the model to an equation and explain how the parts make the total.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 14 as 10 + 14 or think the 1 means one object. They may also count the full group of ten again when finding the total.
How to Assess It
- Give students the number 17 and ask them to draw it, label the group of ten, and complete 17 = 10 + __.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs linking cubes to build teen numbers, snapping ten cubes into one stick and leaving the remaining cubes loose.
Ask, “How are 13 and 18 alike and different?” Have students draw both numbers and write one comparison sentence.
Students draw teen-number cards and race to cover a ten-frame plus extra spaces with counters, then record the matching equation.
Pack classroom pencils into bundles of ten, then count the loose pencils and write the total as ten plus some more.
