What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare lengths and angle measures to decide whether segments, angles, and polygons are congruent. They identify polygons with equal sides and angles, then draw symmetry lines that make matching halves.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state that matching segment lengths and matching angle measures show congruence. They match corresponding sides and angles in polygons, even when a figure is turned or flipped. They identify regular polygons and draw valid symmetry lines.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think figures are not congruent when one is rotated or reflected. They may compare only side lengths and ignore corresponding angles. They may call any equal-sided polygon regular or assume every diagonal is a symmetry line.
How to Assess It
- Give students two labeled quadrilaterals, one rotated, and a regular hexagon. Ask them to justify whether the quadrilaterals are congruent and draw all symmetry lines on the hexagon.

Ways to Teach It
Trace and cut out polygon pairs, then rotate or flip each cutout to test whether it exactly covers its partner.
Show two rotated quadrilaterals and ask, “What measurements prove they are congruent, and which vertices correspond?”
Play Congruence Match: students pair cards showing polygons, side lengths, and angle measures, then explain each match to a partner.
Measure a scale drawing of a stop sign, decide whether it is regular, and draw every line of symmetry.
