What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether segments, angles, or polygons are congruent by comparing their measurements and properties. They identify matching parts and explain why the figures have the same size and shape.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match corresponding sides, angles, and vertices. They use equal lengths and angle measures to decide congruence, even when a figure is rotated, reflected, or moved.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think figures must face the same direction to be congruent. They may match polygons by appearance without checking corresponding sides and angles. Some confuse congruent measures with parallel lines or similar figures.

How to Assess It

Give students two labeled quadrilaterals, with one rotated, and ask, “Are they congruent? List the measurements or properties that prove your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of paper polygons for students to cut out, rotate, reflect, and overlay to test whether corresponding parts match.

  2. Ask students to explain why two polygons can look alike but not be congruent, using side lengths and angle measures as evidence.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair segment, angle, and polygon cards with congruent partners from a shuffled set.

  4. Have students compare two floor tile designs and decide whether the repeated shapes are congruent despite changes in position or direction.
