Virginia SOL 4.MG.5.e
The Standard
Denote properties of quadrilaterals and identify parallel sides, congruent sides, and right angles by using geometric markings.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will classify and describe quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and/or trapezoids) using specific properties and attributes.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and add geometric marks on quadrilateral diagrams. They use matching arrows for parallel sides, matching ticks for congruent sides, and small boxes for right angles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a named quadrilateral, students correctly mark all known side pairs and every right angle. They use distinct arrow or tick patterns when separate pairs have different relationships.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often trust the drawing and mark sides equal or angles square without evidence. They may confuse arrows with tick marks or use one marking style for unrelated pairs. Some mark the corner point instead of the angle region.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a non-square rectangle and ask them to mark all parallel sides, congruent sides, and right angles using standard symbols.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper quadrilaterals, rulers, and corner templates, then have them test properties and add correct arrows, ticks, and right-angle boxes.
Display a marked quadrilateral and ask students to list what the marks prove and what the picture alone cannot prove.
Play Marking Match: students pair property cards with diagrams, then add distinct arrow or tick sets for each matching pair.
Use a simple floor plan and have students mark parallel walls, equal-length edges, and square corners shown in each room.
