Virginia SOL 4.MG.5.b
The Standard
Identify and describe points, line segments, angles, and vertices in quadrilaterals.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will classify and describe quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and/or trapezoids) using specific properties and attributes.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the points where sides meet, the line segments forming the sides, and the angles inside a quadrilateral. They name these parts using letter labels.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name the vertices, sides, and angles of a labeled quadrilateral. They explain that sides are line segments and that two sides meet at each vertex to form an angle.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a side a line, even though it has two endpoints. They may count each angle twice or confuse a vertex with the angle formed there.
How to Assess It
- Give students a labeled quadrilateral ABCD. Ask them to list its four vertices, four line segments, and four angles, then describe one angle.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs craft sticks and clay to build quadrilaterals, then label each vertex, side, and angle with sticky notes.
Show a quadrilateral and ask, “How are a vertex and an angle related?” Students write two sentences and compare responses.
Play Quadrilateral Label Relay, where teams race to mark named vertices, line segments, and angles on shape cards.
Photograph a window, sign, or tabletop, then trace its quadrilateral and label the visible vertices, sides, and angles.
