What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles in drawings. They describe each figure by its endpoints, arrows, or shared vertex.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label each figure in a mixed diagram. They use endpoints, shared vertices, and arrow marks to explain how the figures differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any straight figure a line, ignoring endpoints and arrows. They may confuse a ray’s endpoint with an angle’s vertex or think the vertex is inside the angle.
How to Assess It
- Give students an exit ticket: “Draw and label a point, line, line segment, ray, and angle. Mark every endpoint and vertex.”

Ways to Teach It
Use dot stickers, string, craft sticks, and paper arrowheads to build models of points, lines, segments, rays, and angles.
Show a mixed diagram and ask, “How do the endpoints and arrows prove what each figure is?”
Play a card sort where students group figure cards by zero, one, or two endpoints, then name each figure.
Examine a street map and label locations as points, road sections as segments, continuing roads as rays, and intersections as angles.
