Virginia SOL 4.MG.4.b
The Standard
Describe endpoints and vertices in relation to lines, line segments, rays, and angles.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, and draw points, rays, line segments, angles, and lines, including intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and describe endpoints on lines, line segments, and rays. They explain that an angle’s vertex is the shared endpoint of two rays.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly mark zero endpoints on a line, two on a segment, and one on a ray. They identify an angle’s vertex as the shared endpoint of its two rays.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a drawn line has endpoints because it stops on the page. They may give a ray two endpoints or label any point on an angle as its vertex.
How to Assess It
- Show a line, line segment, ray, and angle. Ask students to mark all endpoints and vertices, then write why a line has no endpoints.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs arrow cards, point counters, and craft sticks to build a line, segment, ray, and angle, then mark endpoints and vertices.
Ask students to explain: How can a point be both an endpoint and the vertex of an angle?
Run a card sort where students match figures with labels such as no endpoints, one endpoint, two endpoints, or one vertex.
Students annotate a playground map, labeling fence sections as segments, flashlight beams as rays, and path corners as angle vertices.
