Virginia SOL 4.MG.4.c
The Standard
Draw representations of points, line segments, rays, angles, and lines, using a ruler or straightedge.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, and draw points, rays, line segments, angles, and lines, including intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create clear drawings of basic geometric figures with a ruler or straightedge. They add dots, labels, and arrowheads to show endpoints and directions accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make straight, clearly labeled figures with a ruler or straightedge. They use dots for endpoints and arrowheads to show which paths continue.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a line with a segment or draw a ray with arrows at both ends. They may also omit endpoints, place an arrow on the wrong end, or draw angles with curved sides.
How to Assess It
- Give students five labels: point A, segment BC, ray DE, line FG, and angle HIJ. Have them draw each with a ruler and add the correct endpoints, arrows, and labels.

Ways to Teach It
Give students rulers and task cards naming figures, then have them draw each figure and mark endpoints and arrows correctly.
Show two similar drawings, such as a segment and a line, and ask students to explain how the markings change the meaning.
Play Figure Match by having students pair labeled word cards with accurate drawings, then correct one mismatched card.
Use a simple street map to trace intersections, routes with endpoints, and paths that continue beyond the map.
