Virginia SOL 4.MG.4.e
The Standard
Use symbolic notation to name points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and to describe parallel and perpendicular lines.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, and draw points, rays, line segments, angles, and lines, including intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read labeled diagrams and record each figure with the correct letter order and symbol. They interpret statements such as AB ∥ CD and EF ⟂ GH, then sketch what those statements mean.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a labeled diagram, a student writes distinct notation for each figure and relationship. The student places an angle’s vertex in the middle, puts a ray’s endpoint first, and uses ∥ and ⟂ accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the same mark for a line, segment, and ray, or leave the mark off. They may reverse ray letters or place an angle’s vertex anywhere except the middle. Some confuse ∥ with ⟂ or judge relationships from a sketch that is not drawn to scale.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write symbols for line AB, segment CD, ray starting at E through F, and an angle with vertex H through G and J. Then show that line AB is parallel to line KL and perpendicular to line MN.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs dot stickers, yarn, and arrow cards to build labeled lines, rays, angles, parallel lines, and perpendicular lines, then record each symbol.
Display ∠ABC, ray BA, and segment AB; ask students to write what each letter position tells the reader.
Run a three-card match game in which students pair a labeled diagram, its geometric name, and its symbolic notation.
Use a classroom floor plan; students label wall segments, door points, and parallel or perpendicular wall pairs with symbols.
