The Standard

Use symbolic notation to name line segments and angles in quadrilaterals.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will classify and describe quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and/or trapezoids) using specific properties and attributes.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Given a labeled quadrilateral, students write each side in segment notation, such as \(\overline{AB}\), and each angle with an angle symbol. They place the angle's vertex letter in the middle and match each name to the diagram.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given quadrilateral ABCD, a student correctly names its sides, including \(\overline{AB}\) and \(\overline{BC}\), without including diagonals. The student names angle B as ∠ABC or ∠CBA and explains why B belongs in the middle.

Common Misconceptions

Students may put the vertex letter first instead of in the middle when naming an angle. They may use line notation instead of segment notation or name a diagonal as a side.

How to Assess It

Display a quadrilateral labeled W, X, Y, Z in order. Ask students to name all four sides and the angles at X and Z using symbols.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students build quadrilateral ABCD with craft sticks and letter stickers, then write symbolic names for its four sides and four angles.

  2. Show ∠ABC and ∠BCA, then ask students to explain which one names angle B and why.

  3. Students match labeled quadrilateral cards with cards showing the correct segment and angle names.

  4. Students label the corners of a classroom whiteboard, then record its sides and angles using symbolic notation.
