The Standard

Given two similar quadrilaterals or triangles, write similarity statements using symbols.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve problems and justify relationships of similarity using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify which vertices, angles, and sides correspond in two similar polygons. They name both figures in matching order and connect the names with the similarity symbol.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly match every vertex in two similar triangles or quadrilaterals. They write the names in corresponding order on both sides of the similarity symbol, even when a figure is rotated or reflected.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the congruence symbol instead of the similarity symbol. They may list vertices by position on the page rather than matching corresponding angles and sides.

How to Assess It

Show two labeled similar triangles, with one rotated. Ask students to mark corresponding vertices and write one correct similarity statement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of labeled shape cutouts; students rotate them, color corresponding vertices, and write each similarity statement.

  2. Display a similarity statement and ask students to explain how its vertex order identifies matching angles and sides.

  3. Run a card sort where students match diagram pairs to correctly ordered similarity statements and remove statements with mismatched vertices.

  4. Compare a small floor plan with an enlarged copy, label matching corners, and write a similarity statement for the room outlines.
