Virginia SOL 7.MG.2.b
The Standard
Identify corresponding sides of similar quadrilaterals and triangles.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve problems and justify relationships of similarity using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match each side of one triangle or quadrilateral with the related side in a similar figure. They use vertex order, angle clues, and side-length relationships to justify their matches.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly pair every side in two similar triangles or quadrilaterals, even when one figure is rotated, reflected, or resized. They justify each match using vertex order, angle relationships, or proportional side lengths.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often match sides by position on the page instead of using vertex order, angle markings, or relative side lengths. They may also pair the longest side with a shorter side after a figure is rotated or reflected.
How to Assess It
- Give students two similar triangles in different orientations and ask them to list all three pairs of corresponding sides and explain one match.

Ways to Teach It
Cut out two similar polygons, rotate or flip one, then connect matching vertices and label each pair of corresponding sides.
Show two similar quadrilaterals and ask, “How can angle markings and vertex order prove which sides correspond?”
Play a matching-card game where students pair side names from similar figures, then check each pair using equal scale factors.
Compare two differently sized floor plans and identify which walls correspond before calculating missing wall lengths.
