Virginia SOL 7.MG.2.a
The Standard
Identify corresponding congruent angles of similar quadrilaterals and triangles, through the use of geometric markings.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve problems and justify relationships of similarity using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read angle arc marks to determine which vertices in two similar triangles or quadrilaterals match. They name each congruent angle pair and keep corresponding vertices in the same order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can pair every marked angle correctly, even when one figure is rotated, reflected, or resized. They name the pairs accurately, such as ∠A ≅ ∠F, and keep the vertex order consistent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often match angles by page position, such as top-left to top-left, instead of reading arc marks. They may think every angle in similar figures is congruent to every other angle. Some confuse side tick marks with angle arcs or list vertices in inconsistent order.
How to Assess It
- Draw rotated triangles ABC and DEF, marking A and F with one arc, B and D with two arcs, and C and E with three arcs. Ask students to list all congruent angle pairs.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of cutout similar triangles and quadrilaterals; students place matching colored arc stickers on corresponding angles, then rotate the figures and check.
Ask, “How do the arc marks show that two corners match even when one figure is turned?” Students answer using vertex names.
Run a card sort where students match figure cards to cards listing the correct congruent angle pairs and vertex order.
Compare a room sketch with a scaled floor plan, then mark and name corresponding corner angles in both drawings.
