Virginia SOL 4.MG.4.d
The Standard
Identify parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines and line segments in plane and solid figures, including those in context.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify, describe, and draw points, rays, line segments, angles, and lines, including intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular lines.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how pairs of lines or segments relate in flat drawings and solid figures. They distinguish parallel pairs, perpendicular pairs, and intersections that do not form right angles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify pairs in drawings, maps, polygons, and solid figures. They use right-angle marks, equal spacing, and shared points to explain each choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think lines are parallel only when they are horizontal or vertical. They may call every intersecting pair perpendicular, or classify segments by where extended lines would meet.
How to Assess It
- Give students four diagrams: slanted parallel segments, perpendicular lines, a nonright intersection, and labeled cube edges. Ask them to classify each pair and state the visual evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Use craft sticks and a square corner tool to build parallel, perpendicular, and nonright intersecting pairs, then label each pair.
Ask students to explain why every perpendicular pair intersects, but not every intersecting pair is perpendicular.
Sort cards showing street maps, polygons, and prisms into parallel, perpendicular, or intersecting groups, then check with a partner.
Find and sketch examples from the classroom, such as floor tiles, window frames, shelf edges, and crossed chair legs.
