Virginia SOL 5.CE.2.b

Math5th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers, having like and unlike denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 (e.g., 5 8 + 1 4 , 4 5 − 2 3 , 33 4 + 2 5 12 ), and simplify the resulting fraction.*

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators (with and without models), and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number and a proper fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate and find exact sums or differences involving fractions and mixed numbers. They use common denominators, regroup when needed, and simplify each result.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a common denominator, rewrite each fraction, and calculate accurately. They estimate to check reasonableness, regroup mixed numbers when needed, and simplify the final answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract the denominators instead of finding equivalent fractions. They may forget to regroup when subtracting mixed numbers or stop before simplifying the answer.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Estimate, then solve 4 1/3 minus 2 5/6. Show equivalent fractions, regrouping, and the simplified answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to model 3/4 plus 5/8, record equivalent fractions, and compare the model with the written calculation.

  2. Ask students to explain why 2/3 plus 1/4 is not 3/7, using words, a drawing, and an equation.

  3. Play Match the Sum: students pair fraction cards with unlike denominators, solve, simplify, and claim the matching answer card.

  4. Give a recipe using 1 1/2 cups and 3/4 cup, then have students find the total and explain a reasonable estimate.
