Virginia SOL 6.CE.1.d

Math6th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Estimate, determine, and justify the solution to single-step and multistep problems in context that involve addition and subtraction with fractions (proper or improper) and mixed numbers, with and without regrouping, that include like and unlike denominators of 12 or less. Answers are expressed in simplest form.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, demonstrate, solve, and justify solutions to problems using operations with fractions and mixed numbers, including those in context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a situation calls for addition, subtraction, or both. They estimate first, then calculate with fractions and mixed numbers using common denominators and regrouping. They simplify the answer and use the estimate to justify it.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select the correct operation and make a useful estimate. They find common denominators, regroup mixed numbers when needed, and calculate accurately. They simplify the result and explain why it is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract denominators instead of finding equivalent fractions. They may regroup one whole incorrectly, such as changing it into ten parts when the denominator is twelve. Some forget to simplify or fail to check whether the answer fits the context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A cooler holds 5 1/2 liters of water. Students drink 1 3/4 liters in the morning and 2/3 liter in the afternoon. Estimate, then find how much remains. Show your work and simplify the answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to model 3 1/4 minus 1 5/6, then record each regrouping and common-denominator step.

  2. Have pairs explain whether 4 2/3 minus 1 7/8 is closer to 2, 3, or 4 before calculating.

  3. Play Target Six: draw two mixed-number cards, choose addition or subtraction, simplify, and score when the result is closest to six.

  4. Plan a class snack recipe by adding ingredient amounts for two batches and subtracting what is already in the pantry.
