Math5th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Estimate and solve single-step and multistep contextual problems involving addition and subtraction with fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers having like and unlike denominators, with and without models. Denominators should be limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Answers should be expressed in simplest form.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators (with and without models), and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number and a proper fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate and solve one-step and multistep fraction problems set in real situations. They add and subtract proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers, then simplify their answers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the needed operations and use common denominators correctly. They estimate to check reasonableness, solve multistep problems, and express answers as simplified fractions or mixed numbers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract both numerators and denominators. They may mishandle whole numbers when regrouping mixed numbers, skip estimation, or forget to simplify the final answer.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A pitcher holds 3 1/4 cups. Remove 5/6 cup, then add 1/2 cup. Estimate, find the exact amount, and simplify.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips and a story card, then have them estimate, model, solve, and simplify the answer.

  2. Ask students to explain why adding numerators and denominators separately fails, using 2/3 plus 3/4 as evidence.

  3. Partners draw multistep fraction task cards, estimate first, solve independently, then earn a point when both answers and methods agree.

  4. Use a recipe card with fractional ingredient amounts and ask students to find what remains after cooking two batches.
