Virginia SOL 4.CE.3.b
The Standard
Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems using addition and subtraction with fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers, having like denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, and simplify the resulting fraction. Addition and subtraction with fractions may include regrouping.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with like denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12), with and without models; and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number (12 or less) and a unit fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve one-step story problems by adding or subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with the same denominator. They estimate first, use a model or equation, and explain why the answer fits. They regroup when needed and simplify the result.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operation and solve accurately, including problems that require regrouping one whole. They connect an estimate, model, equation, and simplified answer to the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract the denominators instead of keeping the common denominator. They may regroup one whole incorrectly, forget to simplify, or choose an operation that does not match the story.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Maya has 2 1/4 yards of ribbon and uses 3/4 yard. Estimate, draw a model, write an equation, simplify the answer, and explain why it is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Have students use fraction strips to model 2 1/6 minus 5/6, trade one whole for sixths, then record the equation.
Ask students to write why 3 7/8 minus 1 5/8 is reasonable using an estimate and an exact solution.
Play Fraction Match: students pair story cards with model cards and simplified answer cards, then explain each match to a partner.
Use a class garden plan: students add 1 5/12 meters and 2 9/12 meters of edging, then simplify the total.
