Virginia SOL 6.CE.1.e
The Standard
Estimate, determine, and justify the solution to single-step and multistep problems in context that involve multiplication and division with fractions (proper or improper) and mixed numbers that include denominators of 12 or less. Answers are expressed in simplest form.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, demonstrate, solve, and justify solutions to problems using operations with fractions and mixed numbers, including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve one-step and multistep context problems by multiplying or dividing fractions and mixed numbers. They estimate first, calculate exactly, simplify the answer, and explain why it makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select the correct operations and find accurate answers in simplest form. They use estimates to check reasonableness and justify each step with equations, models, or clear words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may invert the first fraction or invert when multiplying. They may forget to convert mixed numbers, misread which operation fits the context, or leave answers unsimplified.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A baker uses 2/3 of 4 1/2 cups of flour, with 3/4 cup per loaf. Estimate, solve, and justify how many loaves can be made.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips to model 2 1/4 × 2/3 and 3 ÷ 3/4, then match each model to an equation.
Ask students to decide whether 3 1/2 ÷ 3/4 exceeds 3 1/2 and defend their answer with an estimate.
Play Fraction Problem Match, where students pair context cards with operation cards, solve each problem, and check simplified answers against a key.
Give pairs a recipe for four servings and have them calculate ingredient amounts for 2 1/2 batches.
