Virginia SOL 4.CE.3.a
The Standard
Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers, having like denominators limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 (e.g., 3 8 + 3 8 , 21 5 + 4 5 , 7 4 - 5 4 ) and simplify the resulting fraction. Addition and subtraction with fractions may include regrouping.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of fractions (proper, improper, and mixed numbers with like denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12), with and without models; and solve single-step contextual problems involving multiplication of a whole number (12 or less) and a unit fraction, with models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students first estimate, then find exact sums and differences with fractions or mixed numbers that have the same denominator. They may need to trade a whole for fractional parts, rename improper fractions, and reduce answers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a sensible estimate and uses it to check the exact answer. The student keeps the common denominator, regroups accurately, and writes the result in simplest form.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract the denominators along with the numerators. They may regroup one whole incorrectly, forget to rename an improper fraction, or stop before simplifying.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Estimate and solve 4 1/6 minus 2 5/6, then simplify the answer and show the regrouping.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to model 3 1/4 minus 1 3/4, physically trading one whole for four fourths before subtracting.
Ask students to explain in writing why 2 3/8 plus 1 5/8 is greater than 4 before calculating.
Deal pairs of like-denominator fraction cards, flip an operation coin, and award a point for a correct simplified answer and estimate.
Give students recipe amounts used and remaining, then have them write and solve one subtraction problem using cups or fractions of cups.
