Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
4.NS.5 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 4.NS.5.a
Represent fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers as decimals through hundredths, using multiple representations, limited to halves, fourths, fifths...
- 4.NS.5.b
Identify and model equivalent relationships between fractions (proper or improper) and/or mixed numbers and decimals, using halves, fourths, fifths, tenths, and...
- 4.NS.5.c
Write the decimal and fraction equivalent for a given model (e.g., 1 4 = 0.25 or 0.25 = 1 4 ; 1.25 = 5 4 or 11 4 ; 1.02 = 102 100 or 1 2 100 ).*

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals that name the same amount. They represent each amount with models, symbols, and place value reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly match fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals through hundredths. They use fraction strips, grids, number lines, or place value reasoning to explain each match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write 1/4 as 0.14 or 0.4 by treating the fraction digits as decimal digits. They may also miss that improper fractions and mixed numbers represent values greater than one.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: Represent 1.25 with a drawing, an improper fraction, and a mixed number, then explain why all forms are equal.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and hundred grids to build 3/4, 6/5, and 1 1/2, then label each decimal.
Ask students to explain how 1 1/4, 5/4, and 1.25 name the same amount, using a labeled sketch.
Make card sets with models, fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals, then have teams race to create complete matching groups.
Display prices such as $0.50, $0.75, and $1.25, then have students write each amount as a fraction of a dollar.
