Virginia SOL 3.PS.1.e.iv

Math3rd GradeProbability and Statistics

The Standard

use characteristics of the data to draw conclusions about the data and make predictions based on the data (e.g., it is unlikely that a third grader would like hard boiled eggs)

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read pictographs and bar graphs to notice totals, differences, and patterns. They use those details to state a conclusion and make a reasonable prediction orally or in writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly identify patterns, differences, and category totals. They support a conclusion or prediction with values from the graph and use terms such as likely or unlikely accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count pictures without using the pictograph key, or misread the scale on a bar graph. They may treat the largest category as certain to occur or make predictions without citing data.

How to Assess It

Give students a bar graph of snack choices and ask: “What conclusion can you draw, and what would you predict for the next student? Use numbers.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Survey classmates about recess games, build a sticky-note bar graph, then write one supported conclusion and one prediction.

  2. Display a pictograph and ask, “Which result is surprising, and what graph evidence supports your answer?”

  3. Play Graph Detective by giving pairs clue cards to match with the graph that supports each conclusion or prediction.

  4. Graph one week of cafeteria choices, then predict which meal the kitchen may need to prepare more of next week.
