Virginia SOL 3.CE.2.d
The Standard
Demonstrate fluency with multiplication facts through 10 × 10 by applying reasoning strategies (e.g., doubling, add-a-group, subtract-a-group, near squares, and inverse relationships).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity multiplication and division facts through 10 × 10; and represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems using multiplication and division with whole numbers.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find products when both factors are 10 or less, without relying on repeated counting. They use known facts to derive harder ones by doubling, adding or subtracting a group, or using nearby squares. They explain their strategy and use related division facts to check.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student answers mixed facts accurately and at a steady pace. For 9 × 7, the student can use 10 × 7 = 70, subtract 7, and verify with 63 ÷ 7 = 9.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count by ones or restart skip-counting for every fact. They often subtract 1 instead of one whole group when using a nearby fact. Some confuse multiplication with addition or forget that reversing the factors keeps the same product.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 6 × 7, 8 × 8, and 9 × 6 without skip-counting. Beside each, write a known fact and the adjustment used.

Ways to Teach It
Build a 6 by 7 array with counters, cover a 5 by 7 section, then name the extra group and product.
Ask, “Which strategy is better for 8 × 9, subtracting a group from 8 × 10 or using a near square? Explain.”
Play Fact Strategy Match: students pair each fact card with a known-fact card, solve it, and explain the adjustment for one point.
Plan 9 snack bags with 7 crackers each, find the total from 10 bags, then subtract one group.
