Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
3.CE.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 3.CE.2.a
Represent multiplication and division of whole numbers through 10 × 10, including in a contextual situation, using a variety of approaches and models (e.g., rep...
- 3.CE.2.b
Use inverse relationships to write the related facts connected to a given model for multiplication and division of whole numbers through 10 × 10.
- 3.CE.2.c
Apply strategies (e.g., place value, the properties of multiplication and/or addition) when multiplying and dividing whole numbers.
- 3.CE.2.d
Demonstrate fluency with multiplication facts through 10 × 10 by applying reasoning strategies (e.g., doubling, add-a-group, subtract-a-group, near squares, and...
- 3.CE.2.e
Represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems that involve multiplication and division of whole numbers through 10 × 10.
- 3.CE.2.f
Recall with automaticity the multiplication facts through 10 × 10 and the corresponding division facts.
- 3.CE.2.g
Create an equation to represent the mathematical relationship between equivalent expressions using multiplication and/or division facts through 10 × 10 (e.g., 4...

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recall multiplication and related division facts through 10 × 10. They model facts with groups, arrays, repeated operations, or number lines and explain their strategies. They solve one-step situations and write equations showing related or equivalent expressions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students recall facts accurately without counting each time. They choose the correct operation for a one-step problem and support the answer with a model, equation, or strategy. They use inverse facts and recognize equivalent expressions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think multiplication always makes numbers larger and division always makes them smaller. They may confuse the number of groups with the number in each group. Some treat the equal sign as “the answer comes next” rather than “both sides have the same value.”
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 7 × 6 and 42 ÷ 7. Then solve, “Six bags hold seven apples each,” using a model, an equation, and a related division fact.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 40 counters and ask them to build 5 × 8, split 40 into five groups, and record all four related facts.
Prompt: “Which is easier for 6 × 7, add a group to 5 × 7 or double 3 × 7? Explain.”
Play Fact Family Match with cards showing products, quotients, arrays, and equations; students collect sets that represent the same relationship.
Show a seating chart with 8 rows of 6 chairs, then ask students to find the total and write two division questions.
