Virginia SOL 1.CE.1.b
The Standard
Demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 10 by applying reasoning strategies (e.g., count on/count back, one more/one less, doubles, make ten).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity addition and subtraction facts within 10 and represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers within 20.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students quickly find sums to 10 and differences from numbers no greater than 10. They use patterns such as counting on, counting back, doubles, and making ten.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students answer mixed facts accurately without counting every object. They choose a useful strategy and can explain it, such as using 5 + 5 to solve 5 + 4.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students count every item instead of using a known fact or pattern. They may count the starting number when counting back, causing an answer that is one off. They may also reverse subtraction facts because addition works in either order.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: 3 + 4, 8 − 5, 5 + 5, 9 − 1, 6 + 4, and 10 − 7. Students solve, then explain one strategy with words or a drawing.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs ten-frames and counters to build 7 + 3, 9 − 4, and two student-chosen facts.
Ask, "How can knowing 4 + 4 help you solve 4 + 5?" Students explain with words or pictures.
Play Fact Match: students pair equation cards with answer cards, then name the strategy used before keeping each pair.
Set out 10 crackers and have students solve how many remain after different amounts are eaten.
