Virginia SOL 2.CE.1.b
The Standard
Apply strategies (e.g., the use of concrete and pictorial models, place value, properties of addition, the relationship between addition and subtraction) to determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity addition and subtraction facts within 20 and estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add numbers no greater than 100 and subtract from numbers no greater than 100. They break numbers into tens and ones, make a ten, use known facts, or connect subtraction to addition. They show how their strategy leads to the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a workable strategy, keeps tens and ones organized, and gets an accurate result. The student can show the steps with blocks, drawings, equations, or an open number line. For subtraction, the student can check the result with addition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ignore place value, writing 47 + 26 as 613 by joining 6 tens and 13 ones. Some solve 52 − 38 as 26 by subtracting the smaller digit from the larger digit in each place. Others forget to adjust the tens after making or breaking a ten.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Solve 68 − 29 using a place-value drawing or open number line. Check the result with addition.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs base-ten blocks to build 47 + 36 and 82 − 45, then sketch and label each trade.
Students write two sentences explaining their strategy for 58 + 27, then compare explanations with a partner.
Play Strategy Match with cards showing equations, models, and decompositions, and have students form correct sets of three.
Set up a class store where students combine two prices or find change from $100 using play money and written work.
