What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine groups of objects and identify the feature used to make each group. They describe the groups with labels such as red, blue, circles, or squares.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can examine a completed sort, name the shared attribute in each group, and add an accurate label. The student can explain why an object belongs in its group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a group from one item instead of finding the feature all items share. They may use vague labels or confuse color, shape, size, and object type.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of buttons sorted by number of holes. Ask them to label each group and explain how they chose the labels.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a tray of buttons to sort, then have them place sticky-note labels beside each group and explain the shared feature.
Show a mystery sort of classroom objects and ask, “What rule was used, and what label fits each group?”
Play Sort Detective: one student sorts shape cards, and a partner earns a point by naming and labeling the groups.
Study a grocery shelf photo, identify how products are grouped, and write labels a shopper could use to find an item.
