What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine objects, choose one visible feature, and place objects into matching groups. They explain the rule they used and why each object belongs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort a mixed set without help and use the same feature throughout. The student can name each group and explain why an item belongs there.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch rules midway, such as sorting some objects by color and others by size. They may also think groups must contain equal numbers of objects.
How to Assess It
- Give each student six mixed shape cards. Ask them to make groups using one feature, then explain their sorting rule.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed buttons and three bowls to sort by color, then remix and sort by size.
Show a sorted collection with one misplaced object and ask, "Which object does not belong, and why?"
Play Mystery Sort with attribute cards, where students guess the sorting rule from two completed groups.
Have students organize classroom supplies by one visible feature, then label each container with a drawing.
