What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort objects using one shared feature, such as color, shape, or type. They arrange the groups in clear rows or columns to show how many are in each group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose one sorting rule and place every object in the correct group. They align the groups in rows or columns so amounts can be counted and compared.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may group objects by different features, such as mixing color and shape categories. They may leave uneven spaces, overlap objects, or count the same object twice.
How to Assess It
- Give students eight buttons in two colors and a blank mat. Ask them to sort and arrange the buttons so someone can quickly compare the groups.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a tray of toy animals and a grid mat, then have them sort and align the animals by type.
Show an object graph and ask, “Which group has more, and how can you tell?”
Play Sort and Graph by drawing a category card, sorting matching counters, and checking each group with a partner.
Graph students’ lunch choices by having each child place a linking cube in the row for their chosen meal.
