Virginia SOL 1.PS.1.a

Math1st GradeProbability and Statistics

The Standard

Sort and classify concrete objects into appropriate subsets (categories) based on one or two attributes, such as size, shape, color, and/or thickness (e.g., sort a set of objects that are both red and thick).

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on object graphs, picture graphs, and tables.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students inspect real objects and group them using a clear feature, such as color, shape, size, or thickness. They also use two features together and name the rule for each group.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student accurately sorts a mixed set using a stated rule, such as blue objects or large triangles. When two features are named, the student selects only items that meet both and explains each choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change the sorting rule midway or make overlapping groups when categories should be clear. They may treat “red and thick” as red or thick, including objects that meet only one feature.

How to Assess It

Give each student eight attribute blocks. Say, “Make a group of blocks that are small and blue, then choose one block that does not belong and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a tray of buttons and labeled hoops; students sort by color, then make a group of large buttons with two holes.

  2. Ask, “Which objects belong in the red and thick group, and how can you prove each choice?”

  3. Play Sort It Fast with attribute cards; students draw one or two cards and race to select matching shape tiles.

  4. Sort classroom supplies into bins by type, then sort pencils by color and length to decide where each group belongs.
