What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate where oil production, farming, manufacturing, tourism, and trade are concentrated across the region. They explain how resources, water, location, and transportation routes shape trade with other parts of the world.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare an oil-exporting Gulf country with a country that depends more on farming, tourism, manufacturing, or services. They can explain how the Suez Canal and Strait of Hormuz connect regional economies to global markets.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every country has large oil reserves or that desert land prevents all farming. They may also confuse places that produce goods with ports and waterways used to ship them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank regional map. Ask them to mark one economic activity, one trade route, and explain why each is located there.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank regional map and resource cards, then have them place oil, farming, ports, and trade routes with evidence.
Ask students to write: How does uneven oil distribution shape jobs, wealth, and trade across the region?
Play a four-corner sorting game using country cards labeled oil exporter, farming center, trade hub, or tourism center.
Trace one tanker route from the Persian Gulf to a major market, noting the Strait of Hormuz and Suez Canal.
