What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate the region's main resources, farming zones, industrial centers, and transport routes. They explain why activities cluster in certain places and how oil, gas, metals, cotton, and other goods reach buyers abroad.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect oil and gas to Siberia and the Caspian area, farming to the steppe, and industry to major cities. They identify Europe and Asia as major markets. They explain how pipelines, rail lines, ports, and neighboring countries support trade.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the whole region has the same economy or that cold northern land has no economic value. They often confuse extraction sites with processing centers and think landlocked countries cannot trade globally. Some treat large exports as proof that income is shared evenly.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank regional map and ask them to place one resource, one economic activity, and one trade route. Have them explain each choice in one sentence.
