What Students Need to Do: Students locate major farming, fishing, mining, manufacturing, technology, and service areas across East Asia. They explain why activities cluster in particular places and how ports, shipping routes, imports, and exports connect the region to world markets.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can read an economic map and identify where major activities are concentrated. The student links those patterns to population, resources, transportation, and ports, then compares the trade roles of different countries.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat China as one uniform economy and overlook coastal and inland differences. They may assume every country exports manufactured goods, missing Mongolia's resource economy and North Korea's limited trade. They also confuse where products are made with where companies are based.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: On a blank East Asia map, mark one manufacturing center, one farming area, and one major port. For each, explain its location and trade role.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a blank East Asia map and commodity cards, then place rice, electronics, steel, fishing, and mining in likely clusters and justify one.
Ask, "Why do coastal China, Japan, and South Korea play large trade roles, while inland areas have different economies?"
Play a matching relay where teams pair locations with products, ports, or resources, then earn a point for each accurate explanation.
Have students inspect clothing and electronics labels, map where five items were made, and identify the trade route each likely followed.
