What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify where farming, manufacturing, services, and resource extraction are concentrated across South Asia and Southeast Asia. They use maps and data to explain how resources, labor, transportation, and ports shape trade.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare two countries and support their claims with evidence from a map or data table. They can trace a product from its production area to an overseas market and explain the route.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat each region as economically uniform or assume most people do the same work. They may confuse exports with imports, or production sites with trading partners. They may also assume heavy trade means wealth is shared evenly.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose Bangladesh or Vietnam. Name one major economic activity, identify where it is concentrated, and explain one way it connects to overseas markets.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort cards showing tea, rice, electronics, garments, oil, and software onto a blank regional map, then draw arrows to ports and markets.

  2. Discuss why garment factories cluster near Dhaka while electronics factories cluster around Ho Chi Minh City, using map and labor data as evidence.

  3. Play a matching game with product, production area, transport route, and trade partner cards, awarding points for evidence-based explanations.

  4. Inspect labels on classroom items, locate manufacturing countries in both regions, and trace likely shipping routes to Virginia.
