What Students Need to Do: Students locate where farming, herding, mining, manufacturing, and services are concentrated across Africa south of the Sahara. They explain how resources, climate, transportation, and ports affect exports and trade links.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can read a map or data table and describe regional economic patterns with evidence. They can explain why many countries export raw materials or cash crops and import manufactured goods.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every African country has the same resources and economy. They may also think resource wealth guarantees prosperity or overlook how weak transportation and landlocked locations limit trade.
How to Assess It: Display a map marking oil, cocoa, copper, and major ports. Ask students to identify one distribution pattern and explain how location affects global trade.

Lesson moves
