What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major farming, energy, manufacturing, fishing, forestry, and technology areas in the United States and Canada. They explain how resources, transportation, workers, and markets shape these patterns and connect them to global trade.

- Students can read a map or data table and identify regional economic patterns. They can support a claim about an industry's location and describe what the region exports, imports, or trades.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every region produces the same goods or that industries depend only on natural resources. They may confuse imports with exports or overlook how ports, railways, borders, and trade agreements affect economic activity.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map showing wheat farming, oil production, manufacturing, and major ports. Ask them to explain one location pattern and one likely global trade connection using map evidence.
