What Students Need to Do: Students locate major landforms, rivers, lakes, climate zones, and vegetation regions across sub-Saharan Africa. They explain how drought, erosion, desertification, deforestation, and human activity can change landscapes over time.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately label features such as the Sahel, Congo Basin, Great Rift Valley, and major rivers and lakes. They use maps or images to explain a geographic change and its likely causes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Africa as having one climate or landscape. They may confuse the Sahel with the Sahara, or assume physical features remain unchanged over time.
How to Assess It: Show students two dated satellite images of Lake Chad. Ask them to describe one change, identify one likely cause, and explain one effect on nearby communities.

Lesson moves

Build a clay relief map showing the Great Rift Valley, Ethiopian Highlands, Congo Basin, major rivers, and large lakes.
Write a claim explaining how climate and human activity can change one sub-Saharan African landscape over time.
