What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major landforms, bodies of water, climate zones, and ecosystems across Australia and the Pacific Islands. They explain how tectonic activity, erosion, sea level change, and climate can reshape these places.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label features such as the Outback, Great Dividing Range, Great Barrier Reef, and volcanic island chains. They connect a geographic process to a specific change, such as rising seas shrinking an atoll.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the Pacific Islands as one uniform region or assume all islands formed the same way. They may confuse short-term weather events with climate trends or overlook slow changes caused by erosion and plate movement.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank regional map and ask them to label three physical features. Then ask, “How could one labeled place change over time, and what process would cause that change?”

Ways to Teach It
Build a sand island in a tray, spray water around its edges, and record how erosion changes its shape.
