What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major landforms, waterways, climates, and ecosystems across Latin America and the Caribbean. They explain how earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, erosion, and human land use can change places over time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label features such as the Andes, Amazon River, Atacama Desert, pampas, and Caribbean islands on a map. They use geographic evidence to explain why a place changed and name likely effects on people and ecosystems.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Amazon River with the Amazon rainforest or place the Andes in eastern South America. They may think geographic change happens only through natural disasters, ignoring deforestation, farming, mining, and city growth.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled regional map and ask them to label three major features. Then have them explain one natural or human-caused change to one labeled place.

Ways to Teach It
Build a relief map with clay, then mark the Andes, Amazon Basin, Atacama Desert, pampas, and Caribbean islands using labeled flags.
Ask students to write which force changes the region most over time, hurricanes, tectonic activity, or human land use, and defend their choice.
Play map relay with feature cards, teams place each card on a blank wall map and explain one related environmental change.
Compare satellite images of Amazon deforestation from two years, then list visible land changes and possible effects on rivers, wildlife, and communities.
