What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major landforms, waterways, climate zones, and ecosystems across the United States and Canada. They explain how erosion, glaciers, floods, climate shifts, and human activity can reshape places over time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a physical map to describe and compare regions using specific features. The student can compare maps from different dates and explain a change using mapped evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse physical regions with political borders or weather with climate. They may treat landforms and coastlines as permanent. Some assume all geographic change is natural and overlook dams, mining, farming, and urban growth.
How to Assess It
- Give students current and historical maps of the Mississippi River delta. Ask them to identify one change, name a likely cause, and explain one effect.
