What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine photographs, maps, and satellite images to identify physical and cultural features. They explain how climate, landforms, vegetation, and water relate to buildings, farming, roads, and settlement patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can analyze an unfamiliar landscape and cite visible evidence. They correctly separate physical features from cultural features and explain how people adapted to or changed the environment.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label farms, parks, and reservoirs as physical features because they contain natural materials. They may also assume the environment controls culture rather than shaping choices alongside history, technology, and beliefs.
How to Assess It
- Display a photograph of rice terraces. Ask students to identify two physical features, two cultural features, and explain one connection between them.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed landscape photos and sticky notes to label three physical features, three cultural features, and two links between them.
Compare images of a desert city and river settlement, then write which visible features show environmental influence and cultural choices.
Play a card sort where teams classify landscape features as physical, cultural, or mixed, then defend each disputed choice.
Open a satellite view of the school area and explain how terrain and community needs shaped roads, buildings, and land use.
