What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify major Virginia products and industries, then explain how goods, services, money, and ideas connect Virginia with other countries. They use maps, labels, charts, and short sources to trace one connection and explain its effects.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name current products and industries, such as soybeans, shipbuilding, tourism, and technology, and support each choice with evidence. The student can trace an export or Virginia-based innovation to a global customer and explain its effect on jobs, trade, or daily life.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think industry means only factories, leaving out farming, technology, tourism, and other services. They may confuse imports with exports or claim an invention has global impact without evidence that people outside Virginia use it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Show a shipping card for Virginia soybeans. Ask, “How does this product connect a Virginia farmer, a port, and an overseas buyer, and how does Virginia benefit?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups product, industry, port, and country cards, then have them build a yarn chain showing one Virginia-to-world trade route.

  2. Read a short news brief about a Virginia cybersecurity firm, then explain how its idea could serve customers in several countries.

  3. Run a four-corner sort with cards for oysters, soybeans, ships, software, and tourism, with students justifying each industry choice.

  4. Use a Port of Virginia shipping route map to choose one export and trace its likely path to an overseas market.
