WG.16 is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use maps, graphs, and trade data to explain why industries and trade concentrate in certain places. They trace how goods, money, and information connect countries and create interdependence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a product, a student can trace its supply chain and support location choices with evidence about resources, labor, transport, markets, or policy. The student can explain how a disruption in one country affects others through trade and communication networks.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume countries produce everything they need or that imports are always harmful. They may confuse imports with exports or ignore transportation costs when explaining industry locations. Some think digital communication has removed the effects of distance and geography.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: A country with skilled workers, reliable electricity, and major ports produces computer chips, but its largest port closes. Explain one reason chip production developed there and two effects of the closure.

Lesson moves

Give groups yarn, product cards, and country cards to build a supply network, then remove one country and record the effects.
Ask students to write whether cheaper imported goods justify job losses, using one benefit and one cost.
Run a matching race where teams pair industry cards with location cards and defend each match using a named factor.
Students check labels on three classroom products, map their origins, and identify likely transport and communication links.
