What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Ghana, Mali, and Songhai and describe their trade, wealth, government, and learning. They trace forced migration across the Atlantic, explain its effects, and describe how enslaved Africans preserved culture while enduring hardship and conflict.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label key places and sequence major events, including the 1619 arrival at Old Point Comfort. They use evidence to explain economic and human effects on West Africa, the Americas, and enslaved communities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the ancient empires with modern countries or assume all African societies were alike. They may describe enslavement as voluntary migration, overlook African resistance, or treat enslaved people only as victims without culture and agency.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Atlantic map and four prompts: label one empire, mark Old Point Comfort, draw one trade route, and explain one human impact.

Ways to Teach It
Build a tabletop Atlantic map using yarn, location cards, and goods cards to trace trade, forced migration, and cultural movement.
Write from two evidence cards: How did enslaved Africans preserve family, beliefs, music, foodways, or language despite forced separation?
Play a card sort matching Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Old Point Comfort, trade routes, cultural traditions, and historical effects.
Examine Fort Monroe photographs and a National Park Service account, then list ways the 1619 arrival is remembered in Virginia today.
