What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate Ghana, Mali, and Songhai in West Africa near the Sahara and Niger River. They explain how trade, geography, rulers, religion, and learning shaped each society.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately label the three societies on a map and place them in historical order. They connect gold and salt trade routes to wealth, cities, and powerful governments.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the Ghana Empire with the modern country of Ghana. They may think all three societies ruled at the same time or that their wealth came only from local gold.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank West Africa map and ask them to label the Sahara, Niger River, Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. Then ask how trade supported one society.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a blank map, yarn, and trade cards to mark the Niger River, Sahara, gold fields, salt mines, and major cities.

  2. Ask students to write: How did geography help Ghana, Mali, and Songhai gain wealth and power?

  3. Play a clue sort where teams match location, trade, ruler, religion, and learning cards to Ghana, Mali, or Songhai.

  4. Compare a trans-Saharan trade route with a modern shipping route, then list what moves, who profits, and what makes travel difficult.
