What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use dates and source details to place events in order and group them by shared features. They decide whether statements can be checked with evidence or express a judgment.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create an accurate timeline from source materials and explain how they grouped events. They label statements as fact or opinion and support each choice with evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may order events by where they appear in a text instead of by date. They may treat any statement they agree with as fact or assume opinions cannot include factual evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students four dated event cards and two related statements. Ask them to order the cards, name one event category, and label each statement fact or opinion with a reason.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs dated event strips to arrange on a paper timeline, then color-code events as political, economic, or social.

  2. Ask students to write one checkable statement and one judgment about a class event, then explain how they know the difference.

  3. Play a sorting relay where teams place event cards under category labels and statement cards under fact or opinion.

  4. Use a school calendar to build a timeline of recent events, group them by purpose, and compare factual notices with student opinions.
